About this Website

Many years ago, I had a student tell me I’d taken the mystery out of guitar playing and made it very clear and accessible. That is my goal for this website for music theory, and these stringed instruments that have fascinated me for many years and continue to do so.

Did you just purchase or obtain your first guitar? Are you trying to teach yourself to play guitar and not progressing as quickly as you’d like? Have you been playing for a while and feel like you’ve hit a roadblock or a plateau? Are you a guitar player who is also wanting to learn about either bass, banjo or ukulele? Are you trying to learn about music theory and getting overwhelmed?

If you answered YES to any of the above questions, then you’ve come to the right place. With over 30 years of teaching experience, I’ve helped guitarists, bassists, ukulele and banjo players at all levels progress and enjoy the journey. I’ve also taught music theory for conservatory exams and have worked it into my lessons for many years, emphasizing “THEORY THAT YOU NEED, NOT WHAT YOU DON’T.

In my lessons, I’ve always let the student guide the lessons and gear them towards their interests. If you have any questions, I’ll address them in a blog or video and try to take the mystery out of it.

About Brian McIntyre

I’ve been playing guitar for 40 years. My inspiration to pick it up came from the Beatles as well as 70’s rock [ Kiss, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith] . From there, I became interested in progressive rock [ Rush, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Jethro Tull], blues [ Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, the Allman Brothers], jazz [ Miles Davis, Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin], heavy metal [ Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy], classical and world music.

I graduated from the Humber College Jazz program with a double major in performance and composition. I’ve studied guitar with Greg Stone, Peter Harris, Tony Zorzi, Rob Bulger and Silvio Simone.I studied composition with Ron Harrison, Tony Mergel and Brian Dickenson and sitar with Ram Vakkalanka. I’ve completed Conservatory Of Music theory exams up to Grade 4 counterpoint.

I’ve been teaching since 1989 and have taught lessons at all levels on guitar, bass, banjo, ukulele and music theory. Since 1992, I’ve taught at the Snider School Of Music in Toronto.
